The following are some tips that will help you to improve your English:

1- Think and express your thought in English (simple sentences first, then more complex sentences later)
2- Watch English TV's & movies with Closed-caption (You will improve your listenning, pronunciation,. Also, you will learn the common sentences)
3- Use English to English dictionary. (A English to Vietnamese dictionary translate LIMOUSINE = XE HÒM [:D] Limousine is a luxury transportation)
4- Learn at least 10 new words every day.
5- Read an English book a month. ( It will help to improve your grammar, writing, and vocabulary)

Thank HY!

I rarely speak in english because nobody talk with me here. I only read english books, understand what they write about and don't care about grammar. Do you still understand my sentences? Ha ha, it was very good, wasn't it?

And I don't want to see the word forgive in the next time [sm=20.gif].

BTW, here is my two cents thought.

If you've ever across an American or Englishman, just pick a topic like: the sky is blue, isn't it? -- Something like that will start your conversation. Actually, everybody in the world have the same attitude toward a foreigner speeaking their own language; they will be thrill to teach and they will try their best to understand conversation. Now, it's only you the one who need to express your thought. If he/she wouldn't understand, repeat, repeat (no shame). Still couldn't get your thought through...(a ha!)... change your wording, change the contact in your phrases or sentences. Repeat again and again with patient. Nobody will hurt you on that!!!

I had seen one old-higher-education Vietnamese man speaking with an American, he one thought need to repeat three times, then he change the contact and vocabulary two more times with his French accent for more than 10 minutes. You know what???? Surprisingly, the American got his thought and was very impressed with the old man patient and vocabulary knowledge.

I had been practiced the same way for years.

Dear viviy2k,

Thank you for your useful tips about improving english. However, the most difficult thing is that the English learners don't know how to express their ideas and how to choose words. My teacher said" the best way is to learn from a Reverse Dictionary" Does anybody know what is reverse dictionary, and if anybody has this dictionary, please post it in our forum for everyone to learn, thank you so much, and have a good day.

"Reverse Dictionary" is a dictionary which you know the definition of a word but you don't know the word.

Example: what is the word describe the people who lives are always on the move. They live on one place for short time then move on to another place. ( the word is the GYPSY's)

htld: I found that It is very difficult for you to learn English that way. Because in "Reverse Dictionary" if you describe the meaning of a word it will give you more than one word related to the meaning then you get confuse and you don't know which word is correct one.

..if i may add a little "trick" to boost up the confidence from within and get rid of the shy-ness thingie forever too - yup ! just like everyone said in previous posts that keep talking in English will improve your speaking and listening skills, and dónt be shy, 'cause no one will make fun of how you sound. but just incase if there's someone like that out there - here, armed yourself with this and say it directly at that individual's face: "'YOU THINK YOU'RE SO SMART, EH !?! CAN YOU SPEAK ONE WORD OF VIETNAMESE !?! YEAH, TELL ME ONE WORD !!!!" there !! ..ohh yeah, and dont forget to put you hands on you hips while screaming at his/her face, too.. [:D][:D]..
